Welcome

Welcome to the personal domain of You Li-Ou (游理欧). I was born with the name Rene Goris and have received many names by many people. Some of these names were part of my study of East Asian and other Esotheric/Religious/Spiritual cultures and given to me by leaders of particular branches or schools. Other names were given to me by people who do or do not like me and are therefore making me look better or worse then I am. The name You Li-Ou was given by my Zhengyi Daoist teacher You Xuande (游玄德) and defined particular interests both in my academic persuits as well as well as my personal interests.

According to some I am an adventurer, to others i am a scholar, an investigator, an ancient (古代人), an innovator, spritual, agnostic. A befriended trouble shooter of large companies called me a walking dream for most people of my generation, and compared me with the character played by David Carradine in the tv series Kungfu. he said you (I) am the one that made that happen. i had a dream and followed it and went to live in a Daoist monastery at the other end of the world, survived in a cave, walkin though virgin forest with barely any clothes on, almost stepping on a huge white snake, almost dying from a bug in my stomach and other funny stories. I came back to city life and share my experiences. That was kind of him to say, especially because i never saw myself that way. i just see myself as a child investigating the world. If i have anything to tell people is that they are happyer when they embrace things and investigate them.

Truth must be said, i don't beleive so much in reincarnation after living several years with a reincarnation therapist and studying Buddhism. Gautama said that reincarnation is an illusion, so I stick with that. But in this life i lived quite a lot of different lifes. enough to make a biographer happy. I started my career as a Art-Painter and wandering Poet. I dabbled in fashion photography, Journalism and so on. Since I was about 11 I practiced Yoga and Qigong. At twenty years old i did already have 50 exhibitions, and didn't sell too bad. Some art students photography form the local artschool stole my contact sheets and negatives after i made pictures and got good jobs with those. I was just copyong famous early photographers in their style. But around my 23rd birhtday I was so poor and unsuccesful in competing with people going to artschool that I picked up full time practice in Taiji, Gongfu, Qigong, Neigong, and related studies. that was longer than the avarage working day for most people in the west. Like most people live this kind of monks life I went through all kinds of delusional states of mind, such as thinking I reincarnated, was enlightened and very wise or smart. Fortunately I had some teachers who were even more delusional then me, and some who were way ahead of me, and helped me out of that pit of lack of spiritual progress. I will mention three here in thanks: the first I met was Shen Hongxun, who I think got stuck where most of us get stuck, namely how to bridge the cultural gap of nonsimilarity between Chinese and Western Culture? But he did teach me that discipline is very mportant, and also how to develop substance in what we do. The second is Liu An, accidentally the same name as the master of Huinan, but not the same person. He managed to lead me through a wide range of practices and ideas, providing me with a huge library of ideas and experiences in Chinese medicine and sports. He also showed me many lay-model Daoist priestly practices, that is, he used the skills and needs of Daoist priesthood, but without the need for temples and ritualisation, thus showing how to bridge the gap between performance of ceremony and actual ceremonial skill. The third one was Jan Hakemulder, founder ofthe Intercultural Open University. He helped my academic ambitions on track and is possibly the main support that kept me focussed all these years of study. I am 47 soon. I have started this website in extension of the rest of my work. I hope it will contribute to your enjoyment of life and that your comments will contribute to mine!
